Book review A splendid thousand suns

Bonjour!

Time for a little book review - 'A Thousand Splendid Suns' by Khaled Hosseini

I'm going to put it right out there and say that I loved this book. I will, however, admit that the first time I tried to read it I did put it down after two chapters and didn't pick it back up again for a week or so. When I did start reading it for the second time, I didn't want to put it down!

Where do I even begin with this book? It's filled with love, loss, life, death, war, friendship, betrayal and sorrow. It tells the tale of two girls growing up in different cities at different times. Mariam and Laila. We first hear about Mariam as a small child up until the age of fifteen. Mariam is raised by her mother in a small hut like home, she was born out of wedlock so her and her Mother were pretty much banished to the outskirts of the city. She saw her Father every Thursday, he visitited her and taught her to draw and how to fish, much to her Mothers dismay. When Mariam's Fifteenth birthday rolled around her life changed. Tragedy struck which forced her to live with her Father, however this didn't last long and she entered into an arranged marriage and had to move away.

Then we meet Laila. Brought up by a loving Mother and Father, with two brothers fighting in the war. Laila was well educated and had three very close friends, her closest and best friend was a boy named Tarik. The war brought sorrow, loss, and love - Laila and Tarik both admitted that they were in love with each other the day that Tarik told her he was leaving. Laila lived on the same street as Maraim, neither knowing much about the other until once again tragedy struck and Laila and Mariam's paths crossed.

Mariam and her husband, Rasheed, took Laila in and looked after her, and after yet another twist to the story Laila had to enter into marriage with Rasheed. And this is where the story pretty much began for me. I don't want to say too much and give the story away, but what I will say is Mariam really didn't like Laila but when she found out the reasoning behind her marrying Rasheed, the two became best friends and it became them against the world. There was violence in both marriages from Rasheed, so action needed to be taken, and true friendship blossomed.

I'm going to leave it there and say, if you haven't read this book yet go and and get a copy. It's an amazing read!!

* Next weeks book review will be Jennifer Worth's 'Call the midwife'

Have a great day
